Details on events marking the 75th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador entering Confederation with Canada will be announced today.
What was then known as Newfoundland became Canada’s tenth province at 11:59 on March 31, 1949.
The decision to join Confederation came as the result of decades of referenda and debates.
It was finally decided in a run-off vote following a referendum in 1948 that had three options on the ballot—Responsible Government, Commission of Government and Confederation.
Commission of Government was removed from the ballot on a second vote, with just 52.34 per cent of votes cast in favour of Confederation with Canada.
The squeaker is still the subject of much discussion and debate as to the benefits of joining Canada or whether or not Newfoundland and Labrador would have been able to go it alone.
Premier Andrew Furey will announce plans to recognize the 75th anniversary of Confederation this morning at 11:30 at The Rooms.
