Safe-sport issues in Canada will soon be addressed by a national commission.
Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough has unveiled a suite of measures, including a Future of Sport in Canada Commission that will hold a summit and also produce two reports during its 18-month-long mandate.
Qualtrough made the announcement after a number of calls from several sports quarters for a national inquiry but stopped short of calling for one.
The minister says unsafe sport is a crisis in this country, hence her decision to strike a commission. She says a public inquiry would taken a lot more time
She says a public inquiry has its benefits but sport is primarily a provincial jurisdiction and it could have taken a year to negotiate processes and terms with the provinces and territories.
