A former high school in Bonavista is going to be converted into a comprehensive wellness centre with the help of $550,000 from the Northpine Foundation.
That organization and the Tip-A-Vista Wellness Foundation are teaming up on the project, which will include medical services, communal kitchens, fitness facilities, and healthy living resources.
The initiative applies a holistic approach to health care in rural Newfoundland and Labrador says Northpine.
The 3-year venture targets improving the physical and mental well-being of the communities on the Bonavista Peninsula, taking in about 8,000 people.
Northpine says the approach could revolutionize rural health care in the province and lead to decreased demand for medical services.
A minimum of 300 participants will undergo tailored health and wellness programs, tracking their progress scientifically.
