Another breakthrough in telecommunications has been achieved in Heart’s Content.
Rogers and Lynk Global have successfully completed the first-ever satellite-to-mobile phone call using ordinary cellphones.
The call took place at the same site where the first transatlantic telegraph was sent to Ireland back in 1866.
Premier Andrew Furey and Mabel Tilley with the Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association were the two people on the line completing the call.
“I can hear you loud and clear!” Tilley said. Furey calls the new technology a “game changer” for the province, especially when it comes to communicating with emergency services.
Rogers will launch satellite-to-mobile phone technology in 2024, starting with SMS texting, mass notifications and machine-to-machine AI applications, and then expand the service to include voice and data services. This new technology will deliver wireless services to the country’s most remote wilderness, national parks and rural highways.
