Winter starts tonight in Newfoundland and Labrador in more ways than one on the island.
The winter solstice begins at 11:57 p.m. on the island, a half-hour sooner in Labrador. But winter weather kicks in today. Snow starts first in the west today before spreading to central Newfoundland tonight and the south coast tomorrow.
The Avalon Peninsula will sit this one out, though it will be rainy and foggy for the next couple of days.
Off the Avalon, it’s a different story with winter storm warnings out for just about every region. Snowfall totals could be in the 30 to 60 cm range with the west coast and central bearing the brunt according to meteorologist Tiffany Cheeks.
She says travel will be difficult in some areas today and tomorrow but Saturday looks good right across the island.
