The issue of the post-game hockey handshake has blown up on social media with the majority seemingly against Hockey NL’s ban on the practice.
Hockey NL is ending the handshakes because of issues that have led to suspensions for coaches and players. It takes effect for all games starting in the new year.
Many have taken to social media to share their displeasure with the governing body’s decision.
The parent of a 7-year-old girl in St. John’s says hockey, especially for the younger players, is a way to learn respect, team building and camaraderie.
Stephanie Jones says it also teaches them how to both win and lose graciously.
