It will be a busy weekend for businesses and people looking to pick up last minute gifts as Christmas day approaches.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is offering safety tips for holiday shoppers and those out and about in the community to help prevent vehicle thefts.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says around this time of year, they want to prepare people for potential for crimes of opportunity.
He is reminding people to secure their belongings and to keep their purse or wallet with them at all times. Keep your vehicle locked at all times, avoid leaving valuables parcels inside for any length of time, or store things out of sight until you can remove them.
Cadigan says it’s also important for people to be aware of there surroundings as they get in and out of their vehicles. He says to avoid distractions in parking lots and shopping areas. He says to park in well lit areas, remember where you parked, and have your keys ready to open your door.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to report it to police or Crime Stoppers.
