A fundraiser has been launched for the purchase of a temporary shelter for those who have been living at the tent encampment in St. John’s.
Housing advocates have set a fundraising goal of $22,000 to purchase a shipping container home from NOW Housing in Ontario.
VOCM News spoke with NOW Housing earlier this month. The contracting group has built two, fifty-unit modular housing communities to address tent encampments in Waterloo and Peterborough.
Each unit is equipped with heat and air-conditioning and comes with a bed, mini fridge, desk and shelf.
Fundraiser organizer Mark Wilson says the ultimate goal is to build similar homes here in this province.
He hopes the unit will spark interest from local engineers, contractors, and designers.
