Officials at St. John’s International Airport continue to meet with various airlines in hopes of broadening destination options.
Airport CEO Dennis Hogan says increasing options for both domestic and international travel remains at the top of their agenda with airline meetings taking place frequently.
WestJet’s direct vapour trail between YYT to London Gatwick will begin operating this spring, but Hogan hopes that’s just the beginning when it comes to route expansion on the international level.
He says they’ve heard from travellers and members of the business community about the need for a direct connection between St. John’s and the United States.
Hogan says the airport previously offered direct flights to Newark, New Jersey, but that hasn’t been offered since 2015. Newark offers a number of connection options, and the YYT has been engaging in talks between American and Canadian airlines in hopes of reinstating the route.
