After a successful trial run with speed cameras, the City of Mount Pearl is hoping to see them become a permanent feature.
Cameras were set up in various spots within Mount Pearl and Paradise throughout the summer as part of the provincial government’s pilot project.
Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker isn’t sure if the speed cameras will become a permanent fixture, as the decision now lies with the provincial government.
Aker says that a combination of municipal enforcement and speed cameras seems to work in deterring speeding in areas prone to heavy-foot drivers.
He says that municipal officers have authority to issue tickets for violations under the Highway Traffic Act and believes adding speed cameras to the equitation only strengthens their focus on safety.
