Housing Minister Paul Pike is stressing the importance of the province’s emergency shelter hotline for those experiencing, or at risk of homelessness.
Pike asserts that calling the hotline is a crucial initial step.
He explains that staff can then start the process of finding accommodations tailored to the individual’s needs. While the number of available shelter beds may vary, Pike assures that those with complex needs are given top priority for placement.
“At that point we’re able to begin the process of placing people in spaces that are most responsive to their needs,” he said. “We recognize that some individuals have very complex and diverse needs and there may be challenges with them obtaining housing.
“But the number of beds in our staffed shelters fluctuates (and) these are first priorities for placing individuals with complex needs.”
Furthermore, Pike assures that anyone seeking help will not be turned away. If beds are full, the staff will ensure that individuals have a safe place to sleep.
