“Be prepared.” That’s the message from the Newfoundland T’Railway Council when it comes to heading out on the trails in the winter months.
President Rick Noseworthy says it’s always important to ensure the trails are in safe condition with favourable weather, but sometimes incidents do happen.
He recommends having the proper tools and a plan in place before you head outdoors.
He says you need to be prepared in the case you have to perform a self rescue, which would include carrying ice picks around your neck as well as throw ropes.
While Noseworthy doesn’t recommend heading out on ice with an ATV, a flotation suit should be on hand if travel across ice is expected. He stresses the importance of basic items, like keeping extra clothes and materials to start a fire.
