It’s a New Year’s tradition dating back centuries.
The first recorded New Year’s levee in North America was held in 1646 in what was then known as New France. The tradition of greeting members of the public was later picked up by Lieutenant Governors across what is now Canada.
Lieutenant Governor Joan Marie Aylward is carrying on the tradition today at Government House with the annual New Year’s Day Levee.
She will greet members of the public from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with entertainment provided by The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Jazz Combo and The Celtic Fiddlers.
Refreshments and holiday treats will be served.
