It was a hockey game and ceremonial puck drop that Maggie Connors of St. John’s will never forget.
The first game ever for the Professional Women’s Hockey League was played on New Year’s Day between Toronto and New York with tennis icon Billie Jean King on the ice for the opening ceremonies.

The visitors won 4-0 but Connors, who plays for host Toronto, was named player of the game for her team. The Princeton University graduate is thankful for the opportunity to play in the league.
“To be in that moment for the very first game and to be there and see Billie Jean King come out is something that I’ll never forget,” she said.
Toronto now hits the road to play New York in their house.
