Some people in central Newfoundland would like to see a tighter window on the release of fireworks as the noise can have a profound effect on some people and animals.
Terry O’Neill has proposed to the town council in Grand Falls-Winsor that the usage of the celebratory devices to ring in the new year should be confined to the hours of 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. That would allow residents to prepare for the occasion. He has the support of the mental health association, the autism society and an animal support group.
He says the rules and regulations do not yet reflect their recommendation, but they are making progress.
Council has agreed to meet with the group in the coming days.
Other municipalities have taken steps to impose tighter controls on the timing of the release of personal fireworks.
