Labrador Marine Inc. has completed their last trip to the north coast for the season.
Passenger numbers remained steady at about 5,100 but a record 15,000 tons of freight was shipped in 2023—a 14.5 per cent increase compared to 2022.
Labrador Marine Inc. General Manager Austin Daley says they’ve seen an increase in the amount of construction materials being shipped to the remote communities, indicating increased activity when it comes to development.
The company says they’re seeing an impact from climate change as weather related incidents had very little impact on service.
Daley says they’re now able to operate later in the season without icebreaker assistance due to the lack of ice off the coast of Labrador.
The vessel’s next scheduled trip to the north coast is set for June 16.
