Preparations for the 2025 Canada Summer Games are proving costly for the Town of Paradise.
The town has awarded a $360,000 contract to a Nova Scotia-based company to supply sand for the beach volleyball competition.
Councillor Glen Carew says a special type of sand is required for the event which can only be supplied from a company out of province.
“That sand isn’t available in Newfoundland,” says Carew. “We can’t go out to Musgrave Harbour and dig it up and bring it in to Paradise.” He says the specific sand had to be approved by sport officials before the town could award a contract.
The courts will become a permanent fixture in the town following the games which are set to go ahead in August of 2025.
