Eastern portions of the island could experience a tricky commute home on Friday heading into the weekend as a low pressure system approaches the area.
Snowfall is expected to start in southern regions of the Burin and Avalon peninsulas Friday morning and move northward, hitting the metro region by mid-afternoon.
Meteorologist with the Environment Canada weather office in Gander, Ian Hubbard says accumulations could be significant before the system moves off overnight Friday and into Saturday morning.
Right now forecast amounts range between 20 and 30 cm, but officials expect to get a better picture of what’s to come closer to Friday. In the meantime, winter storm watches are currently in effect with the possibility of more warnings to come.
Winds will also be a factor, resulting in blowing snow and blustery conditions.
Meanwhile, officials are watching another system expected to approach the island by Monday. Environment Canada won’t have a clearer picture of the possible impacts of that system for another couple of days.
