The Mayor of St. John’s is hopeful that there will soon be movement on updating the St. John’s Act.
The provincial government is going through the process of updating all legislation affecting towns and cities.
During the fall sitting of the legislature the province introduced an overhaul of the Municipalities Act, now called the Towns and Local Service Districts Act.
Next up, Danny Breen says the province will be focusing on the Cities Act, and then the St. John’s Act.
He says that order makes sense as each piece of legislation builds on the other.
He says the city is facing challenges now that it never has before, so they need modern legislation to address those issues, as well as a modern fiscal framework.
