The man at the centre of a scam to shake down parents or grandparents for money to bail out their kids, is now reviewing the case against him from Winnipeg.
Twenty-five-year-old Charles Gillen faces dozens of charges in connection with scheme. It’s alleged he flew to St. John’s to collect money from people, mostly nans and pops taken in by the fake sob stories.
He was removed from a flight as it was about to leave St. John’s last March.
Gillen had been in custody since then, facing 46 charges including multiple counts of fraud and extortion.
But just before Christmas he himself was bailed out—ironically, by his own grandmother, who lives in Winnipeg.
Gillen must abide by several strict conditions, including to live with her as his case makes its way through the courts here.
His lawyer, Bob Buckingham, will continue to appear in court on his behalf until the matter is close to resolution.
The case is scheduled to be called again on February 16.
