A temporary dump site that drew the ire of residents of Freshwater, Carbonear has been cleaned up.
The waste management contractor who provides service to a number of towns in the Conception Bay North area ran into some difficulties over the holiday period, and reportedly fell behind on garbage collection in a few locations.
The town of Carbonear expressed concern over the makeshift dump site where garbage collected in neighbouring Victoria was being stored.
Mayor Frank Butt says his town’s concern was over the possibility of a fire, and placing an unwanted strain on the town’s firefighting services.
Others, meanwhile, expressed environmental concerns. Environmental inspectors with the provincial Department of Digital Government and Service NL were called in to assess the situation and the department confirms the garbage has been removed.
The company involved has contracts both with individual towns like Victoria, and with the Eastern Regional Services Board, which is responsible for garbage collection in Carbonear. The ERSB is not responsible for waste collection in Victoria.
