Government initiatives to address the housing situation will not fix things overnight, but the benefits will be seen over time according to Premier Andrew Furey.
The Premier believes housing needs to be approached in two categories: Affordable or social housing.
Furey says 750 new units were launched this past year, and they have over 900 more they hope to build over the next couple of years to address the social housing issue.
On housing that is affordable, he says that involves changing market dynamics to make building new units more affordable for the middle class.
Furey says addressing that was the purpose of their five-point housing plan released earlier in the fall.
The Premier says they need to be creative in how they address housing issues.
Furey says he can appreciate that none of those actions provide immediate relief to people who are struggling, but he thinks they will “bear fruit with time.”
