Crews are going to have their work cut out for them cleaning up a major oil spill following a collision between a commercial passenger bus and oil tanker on the TCH west of Long Harbour yesterday morning.
Whitbourne fire chief Jamie Budden says the rig was loaded with 23,000 litres of fuel, and was emptied after oil flooded the roadways and closed the highway completely for nearly ten hours.
Two people onboard the bus were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Government says the company involved in the incident is responsible for cleaning up, but environmental protection officers have been brought in to assess the impact of the spill.
Various crews are on scene conducting the clean-up, which could take several days, or weeks, given the amount of fuel discharged.
