All 30 people aboard a fishing trawler are safe and sound near Black Tickle, Labrador after the vessel began taking on water over the weekend.
On Sunday around 11 a.m., the Canadian Coast Guard was informed that the Northern Osprey III, out of North Sydney, Nova Scotia, began to take on water through a valve 12 feet below the water line.
The 260-foot factory freezer trawler contacted the Coast Guard, and made its way into the sheltered Porcupine Bay with an escort.
Phil Walker, Superintendent Search and Rescue with the Coast Guard for the Atlantic Region, says no external help was needed and a Coast Guard ship is staying in case of emergency..
Divers are working on conducting external repairs so the ship can travel to St. John’s or St. Anthony.
