The Canadian Red Cross has opened the phone lines for those needing a safe space to talk about their mental health and well-being.
The Friendly Calls program connects Canadians with a volunteer who will speak with someone on a regular basis to provide a listening ear and other supports.
Canadian Red Cross Community Health Coordinator, Em Alexander, says callers will speak to the same volunteer each time, creating a familiar bond between the two.

She says the line is open for anyone over the age of 18 to talk about numerous issues, but they are faced with unique circumstances when it comes to supplying the service in this province.
She says people are struggling, whether it be due to geographic isolation or issues with affordability. She says there’s a real lack of connection for many, especially seniors, making the demand even greater given NL’s aging population.
