Advocate Gemma Hickey is heading to Rome to present a lecture about their proposed zero-tolerance law for clergy abuse.
Last September, Hickey made international news when they lead a pilgrimage to the doors of the Vatican to demand that Pope Francis sign the proposed law.
On Thursday, Hickey will deliver the lecture “Zero Tolerance: Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults” at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
They call it an honour and an important opportunity, because Newfoundland and Labrador is “ground zero” when it comes to clergy sexual abuse. They say getting scholarship behind the proposal is a huge step forward.
Hickey hopes to see further movement on the proposed law later this year.
They are hoping to have a conference as early as June to revise the policy and deliver it to Pope Francis.
