The minister responsible for immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador is not in favour of a cap on the number of international students that can arrive on our shores as the problems being identified do not exist in this province.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller told CTV’s Question Period yesterday he plans to have the conversation with the provincial governments to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs actually rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis.
Newfoundland and Labrador Minister Gerry Byrne says it appears that the federal government is concerned that some post secondary institutions in other provinces may not be doing business as they should when it comes to accepting international students.
Minister Byrne says this province does an amazing job in regulating all post secondary institutions – public and private. He does not wish to see Ottawa come up with a solution to a problem which does not exist in Newfoundland and Labrador.
He says there may be situations where you have one-door training academies being set up but that is not the case in Newfoundland and Labrador.
