The longtime Administrative Chief of the Miawpukek First Nation is retiring.
Chief Mise’l Joe will officially retire from the council this Wednesday in order to focus on his health and spend time with family.
The Mi’kmaq Chief has been involved in Indigenous governance since 1973 and is widely known for his work in advocating for reconciliation and the preservation of Indigenous language and culture.
In 2018, his efforts were recognized with an induction into the Order of Canada.
He says he will remain an advocate and mentor in his retirement. Vice-Chief Harvey Drew will fill the role as Chief until a by-election is held on January 26.
