Memorial University has confirmed that the cyberattack affecting the Grenfell Campus was a ransomware attack.
The investigation continues.
A third party gained access to the Grenfell Campus network, encrypting data on servers and workstations throughout the campus, rendering IT services unavailable.
Memorial says since discovering the incident in late December, university experts have been working with external cybersecurity officials to mitigate the impact on academic, research, student and administrative activities.
In-person classes at Grenfell were able to resume on January 8, and to-date, there has been no evidence that personal information was compromised.
Memorial is cooperating with law enforcement and the incident has been reported to the National Cybercrime Coordination Centre, a unit of the RCMP. The RNC was also advised as was the Centre for Cyber Security and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commission “out of an abundance of caution.”
MUN President Dr. Neil Bose will provide more information to VOCM News today.
