The trial for a figure skating coach accused of sex crimes against two girls has been told that Snapchat was the prime method of private communication between them and the accused.
Thirty-year-old Matthew Power faces 10 charges involving the girls who were teenagers at the time of the alleged offences in the 2016-2017 time frame.
Power was their figure skating coach at the time, and a popular pairs skater himself.
One of his accusers, who cannot be identified, testified she and Power exchanged sexually explicit messages and photos, with him sending a video touching himself, and asking her to do the same.
She also described incidents where they “made out” in the back of car, at Power’s home, and in a small closet at the rink.
She said she was at first hesitant to go to police, but finally did after learning of another girl’s similar allegations against Power.
The now 22-year-old woman, who has been testifying by video from a room adjacent to the courtroom, became emotional at times, relating how she was nervous and she stayed home a lot after going to police, worried about how it would all play out in public.
Power is charged with sexual interference, sexual assault, as well as child luring and making sexually explicit material available to a child.
He was arrested in 2021 after the allegations were first made to police and Skate Canada.
Power remains suspended by the national organization pending the outcome of the trial, which continues next week.
