A woman who stabbed her ex-partner to death in downtown St. John’s more than two years ago will be sentenced on Feb. 1.
Thirty-year-old Lorraine Obed had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with the victim, 49-year-old Jimmy Corcoran, before she killed him on Carter’s Hill on Aug. 26, 2021.
She was initially charged with second-degree murder and elected to be tried by Supreme Court judge and jury.
But that all changed last October when she agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The facts presented thus far paint a picture of a toxic relationship fueled by drugs and alcohol.

Meanwhile, a man charged in another fatal stabbing in the same neighborhood four months later is set to stand trial next month.
Twenty-two-year-old David Quirke is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Rayna Dove.
She was pronounced dead in a Cookstown Road boarding house, where both were living, on the morning of Dec. 27th, 2021.
Quirke’s trial before a Supreme Court judge and jury is scheduled to begin with jury selection on Feb. 12.
