A documentary series shining the spotlight on a weekly hockey game for women and non-binary folks new to the sport is screening publicly for the first time this weekend.
“The Golden League,” produced and directed by Vaida Nairn, follows the weekly game at St. Bon’s Forum, started by Liz Ohle in 2006. The film follows the 2021-22 season and the players involved, who range in age from their twenties to seventies.
Nairn says the documentary started as a sports photography project before discovering a story that needed to be told.
She says it was nice to see the group that celebrate their age and each other and break stereotypes.
Ohle, who is 71 herself, says they have created a safe space that can aid in the growth of hockey culture in the province.
She says it provides people who didn’t have a chance the opportunity to learn and get on the ice and be a part of the team.
The docuseries is available on Bell Fibe TV1 and the public screening takes place Saturday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre at MUN’s Burneau Centre.
