Frigid cold winter temperatures can be tough for anyone to bear, but they can be especially jarring for people who come from warmer climates. The Association for New Canadians says they are working to make sure people are prepared.
Director of Settlement Services, Monica Abdelkader says resettled refugees are given winter clothing at their point of entry into the country, and the ANC works with others who come into this province to make sure they have appropriate clothing such as coats and boots.
The ANC is making sure newcomers are winter-ready in other ways as well.
For example, Abdelkader says on their YouTube channel they have created a series on winter weather in Canada.
She says it touches on things such as home heating, what to do if the power goes, how to avoid frostbite/treat frostbite, and how to avoid isolation.
She says it is very easy for newcomers to simply blast the heat in their homes and be isolated during winter months. She says their team makes sure to check in on people and make sure they aren’t going through the “winter blahs.”
