The Gathering Place has been at capacity most nights over the last few months, a problem that’s heightened when the temperatures plummet.
Wind chills in metro neared minus 30 yesterday, and while things won’t be that extreme tonight, wind chills will still be below minus 10.
Associate Executive Director Kim Grant says they do see higher volumes of the people availing of their services on colder days.
She says their doors are open to get people in and out of the cold, noting that they offer people a hot meal, a shower, and warm clothing.
Grant says they will also do things like open up other parts of their building and extend their hours so people can stay longer.
She says they try to make sure people are limiting their time outside, and their staff will work with people to ensure they have a place to stay.
