The Crown assured a judge yesterday that the prosecution of Markus Hicks “is moving along.”
The 32-year-old Paradise teacher and volleyball coach is facing 93 sex-related charges involving more than a dozen young men or teens dating back several years.
It’s alleged he used fake online profiles to lure victims to his home on Trail’s End Road, then disguised or concealed his identity to have sex with them.
The charges include multiple counts of sexual assault, sexual assault with choking or strangulation, luring children, arranging to commit sex offences against children, and breach of trust related to his position as a teacher.
Defence lawyer Jason Edwards noted it’s been more than four months since Hicks was arrested, yet he’s still waiting on some disclosure.
“I want to see everything I’m dealing with before I can properly instruct my client,” Edwards told provincial court associate chief judge Jennifer Mercer.
Crown prosecutor Richard Deveau said the last batch of almost 50 charges involving five accusers should be ready in time for the next court date on February 9.
Hicks, meanwhile, remains in custody at the corrections centre in Bishop’s Falls.
