The President of the NL Federation of Labour says the latest increase to the minimum wage “is just not going to cut it” for people who are struggling.
Yesterday, the province announced that due to an increase in the National Consumer Price Index, the minimum wage will increase by 60 cents to $15.60 on April 1.
Jessica McCormick points to a Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report that calculates a living wage by region of the province. She says it found that the wage should be between $23 an hour to $27 an hour, depending on the region.
Ultimately, she believes government’s system needs to be re-evaluated.
She says tying the wage to the CPI isn’t necessarily a bad thing. what needs to be looked at, she says, is the starting point for those increases.
