The federal government recently issued some travel advisories for a number of popular vacation destinations like Jamaica and Dominican Republic. That said, a representative with CAA Atlantic says there’s no need for travellers to panic.
Julia Kent, Director of Social Responsibility and Advocacy, says a lot of times these warnings are issued simply because there’s crime in every country.
She says booking your getaway and any excursions through a travel agency will ensure that you are going somewhere safe and booking with reputable agencies.
While on vacation, Kent recommends abiding by basic safety tips, like staying on resort property.
She says it’s a good idea to keep track of all your belongings, like wallets and passports, and follow the guidance of local authorities if they advise you not to go to a certain area. If someone plans to go for a walk, Kent recommends going out with a group of people you know and trust, even during the daytime.
