Contractors tasked with removing an 80-year old railway trestle near Stephenville Crossing have their work cut out for them.
The first half of the Gut Bridge fell into the water on the weekend, but is now trapped within thick mud under the surface.
Mayor Lisa Lucas says the town has very little intel as to what the removal timeline looks like as the job is being handled by private contractors.
She says they trust the crews know what’s best and are handling the job in a way that will have minimal environmental impact.
The bridge has been deemed unsafe for years, prompting government to order it be removed.
ATV use on the trestle has been off limits for over a decade, but the town recently approached government about the possibility of adding an extension to the current bridge used by vehicles.
She says ATV tourism in the region has taken off over the past few years and they’ve been lucky there have been no accidents on the busy stretch of highway. Lucas says they’d like to have an ATV path added to the bridge, but there is no word yet on if that’s going to happen.
