St. John’s City Council has rejected a proposal for a significant daycare development on Thorburn Road.
The rejected proposal was for a two building daycare at 410 Thorburn Road, which is an unserviced area.
The daycare would operate seven days a week, with space for 144 kids and 20 staff.
One of the main concerns was safety.
St. John’s Regional Fire Department says the facility would be one minute over the recommended response time for the nearest detachment.
As well, they also note challenges around dry hydrants and underground tanks, which are required for the area.
Ultimately, council voted to reject the application, including councillor Maggie Burton who says she has been looking into the application for a while.
She says they concerns are warranted, and “despite a desire to approve any and all new daycare spaces” she voted to reject the application.
Meanwhile, city council did approve a new daycare on nearby Austin Street.
That facility will be open Monday through Friday and will be able to accommodate up to 74 kids
