The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning the public of the dangers of illicit drug use following several deaths in the province over the last week.
According to the RNC, there have been five deaths on the northeast Avalon and in Labrador over the last week.
While those deaths are under investigation, and the causes have not yet been determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, they signal to the RNC “the possibility of an increase in the availability of illicit, dangerous, and potentially fatal drugs in our communities.”
The RNC is reminding of the “explicit dangers and life-threatening consequences” of using non-regulated and non-prescription drugs.
They say if someone is experiencing the symptoms of an overdose, 911 should be called immediately. As well, if using illicit drugs ensure naloxone kit is nearby.
They also encourage people struggling with addiction to reach out to local addiction resources, or call 811.
Information on where to get a naloxone kit can be found online.
