Some serious questions are being asked about a recent invitation from the provincial government seeking public input on roads across the province in need of work.
The deadline for public comment on which highway improvement work they’d like to see in the coming season passed on Monday, but it’s raising some serious questions from at least one community sector advocate.
The department invited people to send comments on and pictures of the condition of roads in their area.
Former Marystown town councillor, and Executive Director of Grace Sparkes House, Lisa Slaney, says while she appreciates the call for public input, she’s curious about the process involved.
“Who wins the colouring contest?” Slaney asks, “if your own employees, your own engineers, the people who do the maintenance on these roads…are not recommending to you what needs to be done, and you’re coming and asking the public for input in what gets considered, well then you need to start being a little more transparent with us of how this is going to be evaluated.”
