Quadrangle NL, representing Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community, is releasing the findings of an extensive research project on health care in the province.
In the first study of its kind here, Quadrangle surveyed hundreds of gender and sexually-diverse community members to learn about their specific health needs, their barriers to health care, and the changes they’d like to see in the health care system.
For example, the study found 50 per cent of 2SLGBTQIA+ members say their mental health is poor or very poor, with 73 per cent saying they didn’t get the mental health care they needed in the past year.
The research team will be presenting all of their findings during two public town halls — one in St. John’s, and online, on Monday, and one in Happy Valley-Goose Bay later this month.
A series of workshops will also be offered for health care providers, insurers, and educators based on the research.
The St. John’s town hall is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at 245 Freshwater Road, but will also be available online.
The Labrador town hall will take place on March 28 at 49 Grenfell Street in Happy Valley-Goose Bay from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
