Rainfall warnings are in effect for the Avalon, Burin and Bonavista peninsulas as well as the Harbour Breton area—and that means flooding is possible in some regions.
Heavy rainfall, coupled with the frozen ground and the 80+ cm of snow that fell in some regions in recent days, could result in significant runoff.
The rain begins in the south early this afternoon and spreads to metro by about suppertime with around 40 mm. Another 10 mm will fall tomorrow morning.
Wanda Batten, meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the system is a complex one with snowfall warnings in central and most of the Northern Peninsula.
There are also high winds gusting to 150 km/h in the Wreckhouse today and 110 tonight, and close to 100 in exposed areas of the Avalon Peninsula.
Environment Canada is advising that storm drains and gutters be cleared of snow or ice to help with runoff, but with many drains buried under feet of snow, that may not be possible.
