Diabetes Canada is welcoming news that the province is expanding its continuous glucose monitoring program.
Government set aside $1.8 million in last week’s budget to expand eligibility for the devices that allow one to monitor their blood sugar through the use of a smartphone.
Previously, the pilot was only open to under 18 patients under the care of specialists at the Janeway.
Type 1 diabetics aged 25 and under, who are enrolled in the province’s insulin pump program, will now be eligible for the full coverage of the device. Those experiencing gestational diabetes during pregnancy are also eligible for the program.
Funding for the continuous glucose monitoring program is derived from the sugar sweetened beverage tax.
