On April 1st, members of parliament from all political stripe will be getting a pay increase. The raise comes on the same day as taxpayers will be hit with increases in the carbon tax.
A Leger poll commissioned by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation reveals 80 per cent of Canadians oppose the MP pay raise.
Franco Terrazano, federal director with the federation, says now is not the time for such a move as Canadians are struggling with the high cost of living. The country will be paying their politicians between $8,000 and $16,000 more as of April 1st.
After the raise, a backbench MP will make just over $200,000 per year, a cabinet minister just under $300,000, and the Prime Minister about $405,000.
Terrazzano says in addition to the 80 per cent, many were unsure. Seven per cent answered that they did not know and 7 per cent were only somewhat supportive.
