Atlantic Premiers, including Andrew Furey, have written the Prime Minister to share with him some of the issues facing the region, and asking for clarity on a number of items.
Those issues include housing, infrastructure, international students, labour market transfer agreements and pharmacare.
The premiers say Atlantic Canada is being “profoundly” affected by the current housing crisis and they say recent housing decisions made by Ottawa are “creating uncertainty about the future sustainability” of announced programs without proper engagement with regional leaders.
The premiers say municipal leaders have been asking about the status of the Canada Community Building Fund, and the infrastructure needed to allow that to happen. They say without a clear understanding of Ottawa’s plans, they’re concerned that they might miss out on work during the short construction season.
They also question Ottawa’s “unbalanced” approach to allocations for International students in the region which “diverge significantly” from the initial announced cap.
