Today marks 75 years since Newfoundland joined Confederation, and a popular traditional Newfoundland and Labrador band has just released a new song to mark the anniversary.
On Saturday night, Opera on the Avalon launched their latest project titled “75×75″—a tribute to 75 years since the province joined Canada.
They marked the launch with the release of a song titled “1949” that was written by Amelia Curran and performed by Rum Ragged.
Mark Manning of Rum Ragged says it’s a project they’ve been working on for a number of years.
He says it was back in 2021 when Curran sent over the song. Then when the opportunity arose with Opera on the Avalon, it seemed like the perfect fit to make a video to shine a light on the anniversary and what it means to people around Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada.
Manning explains that the song speaks to the province’s history.
The Rum Ragged front man says it was special to be a part of telling the story of 75 years of Confederation.
He says getting to sing about the stories that have happened between now and then continues to happen every day and it’s something they are proud to be able to do.
