Transportation crews have fanned out across the western portion of the island assessing damage and effecting repairs following flash flooding over the Easter weekend.
The hardest hit area was Rouze’s Brook in Cape St. George. Video circulating on social media shows water eating the road away and massive culverts tossed around like toys.
Transportation Minister John Abbott says work fixing the damage and replacing the culverts with infrastructure better able to handle higher volumes of water is now underway and is expected to take a few more days.
“It’ll probably take us a good part of a week before that is re-connected,” says Abbott. “There is a way around…but it means backtracking by up to 80 kms, which is unfortunate.”
In the meantime, Highway 440 at Hugh’s Brook is reduced to a single lane, while Route 460 at De Grau is also washed out at Rouze’s Brook. Work to repair damage in those areas is now underway.
