Premier Andrew Furey is calling for an emergency meeting of all leaders across the country to talk climate change and the carbon tax.
Furey is one of seven premiers who disagree with Ottawa’s approach to reducing the carbon footprint.
The NL Premier notes in a letter to the Prime Minister on the weekend that his province is three times the size of the Maritimes combined and includes an island, hundreds of small coastal communities, and a vast northern region. He adds that goods have to be shipped, then trucked throughout the province. There is no rail system or subway system, and infrastructure to support electric vehicles is improving but remains inadequate.
He tells the PM that the tax increase will not have the desired effect of lowering emissions in Newfoundland and Labrador
Premier Furey is not disputing that the threat of climate change is pressing—he’s saying that a tax increase is not the way to go about it.
I have asked the Prime Minister to convene a meeting to discuss alternatives to the carbon tax, as I continue to ask for a pause to today’s planned increase. pic.twitter.com/a75Sv46zpX
