The Director of External Affairs with MUNSU says a town hall scheduled for later this month will look at a broad range of topics and not just funding cuts at the University.
John Harris says Premier, opposition leaders, MUN President Dr. Neil Bose and Board of Regents Chair Glenn Barnes have all been invited to attend the event, which is scheduled for April 22.
Harris says the event will broadly be looking at the cost of living for students, and how that effects education and the future of the province.
Harris reflects on the PERT report from 2021, which he believes was the “nexus” for tuition increases at the University.
He paraphrases part of the report which says that young people have to be the future of the province, get an education and have high skills to work and pay for the debt.
He says students are being asked to take on a “tremendous amount of debt” to do that, creating a high stress environment, and he worries that will force more people to take jobs outside of the province.
The town hall is happening on April 22 at 7 p.m. at The Breezeway .
